Maori Scholarships resource

The following scholarships are for Maori students studying at an undergraduate level and are administered by the Maori Education Trust. The number and value of
scholarships depends on the income in any one year.

Frances Irwin Hunt Scholarship (Arts)
Assistance available to students with excellent academic and leadership qualities, undertaking full-time studies at tertiary level in the field of performing or cultural arts at a recognised New Zealand tertiary institution. Value: $3,500 Number 6

John Tapiata Memorial Tertiary Scholarship
Scholarship for student in first year of full-time study in a Bachelor of Physical Education at the University of Otago. Successful applicant must have an excellent academic record and leadership qualities. Closing date for applications is 19 May, Value: $5000 Number: 1

KPMG Scholarship
Available to a Maori student majoring in Accountancy and who is in their final year at university. The student must have excellent academic, leadership and personal qualities. She/he must be prepared to work in the KPMG Wellington office for a
minimum of one year following graduation. Closing date: 19 May Value: $3000 Number:1

Meri Mataira Scholarship
Assistance is available to students studying sport, fitness and leisure at a recognised New Zealand tertiary institution. The applicant must have proven academic and sporting ability. Closing date for application is 19 May, Value:$5000 Number: 1

New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects Scholarship
This scholarship is available to a Maori student undertaking a degree in landscape architecture at a New Zealand University. Closing date 19 May, Value: $600 Number:1

Ngarimu V.C and 28th (Maori) Battalion Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship available at tertiary level for the purpose of promoting the study and encouraging the maintenance of the Maori language, Maori history, tradition and culture. Closing date for application is 8 March. Awards are based on merit. Value: $5000 Number:3

Nicholas Irwin Hunt Scholarships (Writing)
This award is available to assist Maori writers particularly in the field of journalism. A proven ability in writing, academic pursuits and leadership is required. Closing date: 19 May 2000, Value: $3500 Number:3

Norman Kirk Memorial Tertiary Scholarship
Assistance available to Maori students undertaking tertiary studies at a recognised Polytechnic in New Zealand. Priority will be given to those students with demonstrated financial need, academic merit and aptitude for undertaking studies in agriculture, fishing, nursing, forestry or horticulture. Closing date: 19 May 2000, Value: $500 Number: 20

Princess Te Puea Memorial Tertiary Scholarship
Assistance available for a Maori student, with excellent academic, leadership and personal qualities undertaking first year, full-time study towards a Bachelor of Parks and Recreation Management at any NZ university, Value: $3000 Number:1

Regional Health Authorities Scholarship
Maori Health Scholarships. There are a wide range of scholarships available
for Maori students studying in the field of health including health administration. They are awarded on academic merit. Value: Variable, between $500 and $7000

Rose Hellaby Bursaries
(1 year only) Bursary available to a 2nd year, full time tertiary students who desires to qualify or be employed in any profession or calling where special academic, mathematical or mechanical skills and qualifications are necessary. Awards are based on academic merit, proof of leadership qualities and skill in Te Reo Maori. Closing date for applications is 19 May 2000. Value: $1000 Number 80

Roy Watling Mitchell Bursaries
Available to Maori students on academic merit, who ordinarily reside in or whose tribal affiliations are with the Auckland or Northland provinces, to enable them to undertake tertiary study in New Zealand or overseas. Closing date: 19 May 2000, Value: $1000 Number 24

Sir Apirana Ngata Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is available to a 7th form Maori school leaver from Ngata
College undertaking full-time tertiary studies. Closing date: 19 May 2000,
Value: $1000 Number 1

Taratahi Agricultural Tertiary Scholarship
Available to a Maori student undertaking a full-time 42 week residential course at Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre. Preference is given to those of Ngati
Kahungunu descent. Closing date:19 May 2000, or later depending on the intake Value: $3000 Number:1

Te Maru Maori Trust Scholarships
Available to Maori graduates with a record of academic excellence and the
proven ability to complete post-graduate studies in either NZ or overseas. Closing date: 16 June 2000, Value: $5000 Number 2

Transpower New Zealand Scholarship
Assistance available to students at intermediate level in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering at a recognised New Zealand Polytechnic or University. Closing date for applications is 19 May 2000, Value: $5000 Number 2

Maori Education Trust Professions Scholarships
Available to a Maori student undertaking research at post-graduate level, in a profession where very few Maori are represented. Closing Date: 16 June 2000, Value $5,000.00, Number: 1

Ti Maru Maori Trust Scholarships
These scholarships are for Maori students undertaking tertiary studies at a recognised NZ tertiary institution. They are awarded on academic merit. Closing date: 19 May 2000, Value: $5,000, Number 2

This scholarship is available for sixth or seventh form Maori students with academic ability, who are studying Science and Mathematics. Closing Date: 19 May 2000, Value: $500, Number: 20

Kia ata mai Educational Trust Scholarship
Available to a Maori student undertaking a M.A. in Maori medium literacy at Waikato or Auckland university. The successful applicant must have held a teacher’s registration certificate. Closing Date: 16 June 2000, Value: up to $5000 depending on fees, Number:1
