Maori Scholarships resource

The following scholarships are for Maori students studying at a post-graduate level at a tertiary institution and are administered (unless indicated otherwise) by the Maori Education Trust. The number and value of the scholarships available depends on the income available in any one year.

Eric Hall McCormick Scholarship
This award is available to a Maori student undertaking research at post-graduate
level in a field which is of significant benefit to the Maori people. Preference will be given to a Maori student attending the University of Auckland. Value: $7500 Number 1

Lincoln University Takata Whenua Postgraduate Scholarship
This scholarship is designed to encourage postgraduate research at Lincoln University for Maori candidates with a commitment to kaupapa Maori. Whilst the scholarship is open to Maori of any iwi, it is expected that the recipient shall have some knowledge of Ngai Tahu customs and traditions. Closing date: 1 November of the year preceding the award of the scholarship. Value: To be determined
by the Vice Chancellor. (current value for PhD is $11,000 and $9,000 for a
Masters degree) Number: 1 per year.

Massey University Masterate Scholarship for Maori Students.
Massey Masterate Scholarships are offered for the purpose of encouraging postgraduate study and research at Massey University. One scholarship will be
reserved for a Maori student. Open to persons who are registered or eligible to register, as candidates for a masters degree at Massey University, or who expect to be eligible to register within five months of closing date of application. Each scholar shall during the tenure of the scholarship, be enrolled as a student of Massey University and shall pursue a full time programme of research (at least 75
points) towards a master’s degree. Each scholarship is tenable for one year. Value: $5000, payable as follows: $2500 on confirmation of enrolment (April) and $2500 in September. In addition to the emolument, the scholarship covers
registration and fees at the New Zealand rate.

N.Z Institute of Landscape Architects Tertiary Scholarship
Available to either an under-graduate or post-graduate Maori student studying towards a degree in landscape architecture in a New Zealand university. Preference will be given to a post-graduate student. Closing date: 16 June 2000,Value: $600 Number: 1

Ngarimu VC and 28th (Maori) Battalion Post-graduate Scholarship
Assistance is available to a Maori graduate with a record of academic excellence and ability to complete post-graduate studies in either New Zealand or overseas. Closing date of application is 31 March 2000, Value: $5000 Number:1

Queen Elizabeth II Postgraduate Fellowship
Available to Maori or non-Maori graduate with excellent academic ability, for research in either New Zealand or overseas, in a field which will be of benefit to all Maori people. Closing date for applications is 16 June 2000, Value: $5000 Number:1

Rangiriri and Whiwhi Martin Winiata Post-graduate Scholarship
Assistance available to Maori graduates to enable them to complete post-graduate studies in either New Zealand or overseas. Pre-requisites are a Masters degree and proven academic excellence. Closing date: March Value: $5000 Number:2

Roy Watling Mitchell Prestigious Professions Scholarship
Available to a Maori graduate who is ordinarily resident in or who has tribal
affiliations with the Auckland or Northland provinces. The applicant must have a record of academic excellence and the proven ability to complete post-graduate studies in New Zealand. Closing date: 16 June 2000, Value: $5000 Number 2

Ti Maru Maori Trust Scholarship
Assistance available to graduate with record of academic excellence and the
ability to complete post-graduate studies in either New Zealand or overseas. Closing date for application is March Value: $5000 Number 2.

Transpower New Zealand Scholarship
Assistance available to graduate with a degree in either Electrical or Mechanical Engineering who has a record of academic excellence and who wishes to study for a Master’s degree in a related field. Closing date for applications is 16 June 2000,
