Ministry of Education Teaching Scholarships
Value: $10,000 each given out in three equal instalments
Categories: Mäori graduates (25 scholarships) -with priority given to those intending to enter secondary training
Mäori non-graduates (10 scholarships)
Mäori Language Trainees (10 scholarships) - Mäori and non-Mäori graduates proficient in te reo Mäori intending to train to teach the Mäori language as a secondary level subject.
Mäori medium trainees (10 scholarships) - Mäori and non-Mäori graduates and non-graduates proficient in te reo Mäori intending to train to teach using the Mäori
language as the language of instruction to teach mainstream subjects.
Secondary subject areas of shortage -graduates intending to train to teach
maths (15), graphics, computing or home economics (5 total) who have at
least a degree with relevant stage three papers or an equivalent tertiary
qualification.
Rural Trainees (5 scholarships) -graduates and non-graduates living and expecting to teach in rural areas or towns of 10,000 people or less, with priority given to regions with teacher staffing difficulties such as Northland, East Cape, Urewa, Wairoa and the West Coast.

Te Ohu Kai Moana Scholarship
Te Ohu Kai Moana / Fisheries Commission is offering a number of scholarships aimed at enabling Mäori to enter, or move ahead in the management, business and activity of the fishing industry. Fields of study include aquaculture, marine science, food technology, fisheries technology, seafood technology and marine
resources management.

Te Puna Matauranga o Aotearoa Scholarships /
National Library of New Zealand Scholarships

The National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Matauranga o Aotearoa is offering scholarships to Mäori wishing to study librarianship. The purpose of the scholarships is to assist Mäori who have definite aspirations in librarianship. The scholarship is open to candidates for the MLIS at Victoria University of Wellington and those studying for librarianship qualifications through the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand. The scholarship does not necessarily have to be used in one year, ie: it could be granted to someone wanting to study part-time over a number of years. The scholarship will cover course costs and part-time work at the National Library might also be offered. Closing date: 15 December 1999.

Te Tari Taake Scholarship
Inland Revenue scholarship available to Maori, Pacific Island and people with disabilities. Applicants should be taking courses relevant to the work of Inland Revenue. Scholarships worth $3,500 a year and Inland Revenue will provide holiday work with a view to employment upon completion of degree.

Te Tari Tatau Scholarship
Statistics New Zealand is offering a Maori scholarship to assist a person in attending University to study towards a degree or mathematics at an undergraduate level. The qualification must be relevant to the work of Statistics New Zealand and is open to all Maori. The scholarship is $3,500 annually and is available up to three years. Closing date: 31 October

Te Tauri Whiri i te Reo Maori Scholarships
The Maori Language Commission, Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori, will award
two scholarships as part of the Maori Language Celebrations, Te Ngahurutanga - toku reo, toku mana. Worth $5000 each. Available to Maori or non Maori for post-graduate Maori Language studies. Applications close 15 May.

Whaia te iti Kahurangi Scholarship
Parliamentary library Maori scholarship opportunity in librarianship. Successful applicant will work as a library assistant in the Parliamentary library in 1997 and then take up full time study in the Masters of Library and Information Studies at
Victoria University, Wellington in 1998. Having completed this course the applicant is required to work as a librarian for the Parliamentary library for at least 12 months. The scholarship is for $5000. Closing date: 13 October.

Regional Health Authorities (HFA) Maori Health Scholarships
The following scholarships for Maori students are available from RHA’s/HFA
and administered by the Maori Education Trust.
6th and 7th form students studying mathematics and science and need assistance for buying textbooks. Twenty scholarships available of $500.
Polytech or university students studying towards a certificate, diploma
or degree in the field of health or health administration and require assistance with the purchase of textbooks. Twenty scholarships available of $500
.Second or third year students studying at Polytech to become registered nurses. Ten scholarships available of $1000.
Registered nurses who wish to undertake a one year diploma course in midwifery at Polytech. Ten scholarships available of $2000.
Mature students who have been accepted for a three year degree course in midwifery. Ten scholarships available of $2000.
Second to sixth year students studying for a Bachelor of Medicine, Surgery or Medical Science. Twenty scholarships available of $2000.
Students researching at postgraduate level in one of the field of health including the following; Masters of Health Management, Diploma of Management (health) Master of Public Health, Diploma of Public Health. Ten scholarships available of $2000.
